Workshop – The 7 Zapatista Principles

The Zapatista Army (EZLN) – Army Ejército Zapatista de Liberación Nacional started a rebellion January 1, 1994 in Chiapas, Mexico.  In part, the Zapatistas began the rebellion as a response to the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). They demanded rights for Indigenous communities and wanted participatory democracy. In 1996, the EZLN and the government signed the San Andres accords, which centered around the state acknowledging Indigenous rights and the Zapatista’s autonomy. However, the government did not adhere to the accords. Because of this, in 2003, the EZLN formed their autonomous government. The Zapatistas’ resistance continues to demand freedom, democracy, and justice.
